I tried to persuade her to change her mind by telling her some of the things I've written in this booklet, but didn't succeed. It is tragic that marriage should be treated so cynically by so many people.
It is the butt of so much distasteful humor and the subject of so many jokes that young people must often wonder what sort of sinister ghost it is that lurks in the matrimonial cupboard.

I was afraid she might say no——and I was afraid that if she said yes, I wouldn’t know what I was supposed to do on a date and would make a fool of myself. I did go on a date once when I was seventeen, but that was because the girl asked me. That may sound boring: 24 years without even one girlfriend, then the rest of my life attached to the same woman. To most young people it is a thrilling game played with great zest. `I've seen enough of married life in the home where I've been brought up,' she answered.
